If you're going to immerse yourself in Chinese Mandarin courses in Taiwan, then it is a good thing its nickname is the Beautiful Island. With over 23 million people, it's also a crowded island, but that is part of its charm. In essence, there are two sides to Taiwan – the densely-populated, high-tech city centers that line the western coast, and the charming mountain villages that dot the eastern highland – and together they do make a beautiful island. Taipei, the capital, is home to the Taipei 101, one of the world's largest skyscrapers, and awash with restaurants and entertainment, including the Shilin Night Market. Visit the National Chang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and National Palace Museum for local history. While the cities are impressive, the smaller towns and national parks are exquisite. The former gold mining town of Hualien is popular spot and hiking in nearby Taroko Gorge cannot be beat. After a long hike, have a drink of local High Mountain Ooling tea and replenish the body with a dip in one of the island's numerous natural hot springs. Alishan, Kenting National Park, and Yushan (Jade Mountain) are some of the most scenic and remote locations and certainly worth the trip – just bring lots of water, as Taiwan can get hot and humid. Better than the scenery are the amazing people who often live near these areas, including some of the 13 aboriginal populations on the island. Go to Chinese Mandarin school in Taiwan and embrace the beauty of the Beautiful Island.
