B1 German course - intermediate level - independent language use
Requirements
For the B1 intensive course at our language school, we assume that you already have a solid basic vocabulary and have internalized some uncomplicated grammatical structures. The course builds on the A2 intensive course. If you are not sure whether you can take the B1 course, we recommend that you take a free placement test before registering at our language school so that you can take the right course. However, we are also happy to fill in any gaps in your knowledge that may exist. For example, if your A2 course was some time ago, our teachers will be happy to help you brush up on what you have already learned. An open atmosphere, where questions can be asked, is especially important to us.
Course structure & Our methodology
As the course progresses, your grammar and vocabulary skills will develop and you will be encouraged to speak fluently and coherently. You will be encouraged at all levels: Writing, listening comprehension, reading skills and pronunciation are equally important. This is done at the appropriate B1 level, which covers a wide range of topics. These are often job-related, but are also intended to address the everyday world of the learner and to be tailored to your interests. You will have sufficient scope to bring your own areas of interest into the classroom.
In a playful way, you will internalize the means of speaking and learn familiar and simple phrases, for example in role plays or presentations. Through playful exercises with words and phrases or idioms, the participants of the course should slowly develop a sensitivity for the language and an awareness of what sounds right and wrong. In this way, the learners gain an uncomplicated access to new words and grammatical structures through playful learning. They then use these again and again and repeat the newly acquired knowledge. With the help of texts, the students practice talking about a topic and are slowly led towards an action-oriented and coherent way of writing. We want to practise especially real situations that are close to the coming everyday tasks with the learners at an early stage in order to prepare them in the best possible way for their future life in Germany and to enable them to participate in social life in Germany through practised expressions and structures.
Language level at the end of the course
Our educational institution complies with the optional descriptions of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. According to this our participants will understand the most important points of a conversation after successful completion of the course, if a clear standard language is used. Especially about familiar topics such as work, school, leisure time and travel, learners will be able to make themselves understood in conversation. They can also talk about experiences, dreams and wishes as well as goals and plans and explain and justify them further.
Textually, our participants can write a personal letter and also express more abstract thoughts and feelings. Field reports with more detailed descriptions and essays with factual information can also be written. In addition, texts can be summarized and the most important information can be written down in notes in a simple lecture or presentation. The vocabulary consists of a solid basic vocabulary and some frequently used phrases, but also some more complex words of one's own field of interest. The grammatical structures are already internalized in the core, but some mistakes are still being made. However, communication is not hindered by this, but it remains understandable what is meant.
Your vocabulary is about 1800 words.
Below you will find the most important vocabulary for level B1:
Final Examination & Certificate
At the end of the course you will write an internal examination of the language school, which is based on the examinations of the Goethe-Institut. You will also write a short test every week to check your language level. This way we ensure that you will pass the final exam. These are included in the course fees.
You also have the option of taking a telc Deutsch B1/ Zertifikat Deutsch B1 exam, which is subject to additional costs. You can find more information about the telc examinations on our homepage.

We believe that learning a language is not only about acquiring vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, but that learning a language always means immersion in the respective culture. For this reason, we place great emphasis on teaching our language students not only the necessary language skills, but also the German culture. With this in mind, we encourage encounters with the local population and are therefore happy to provide information about language cafés, ( sports ) clubs, etc. and organise trips on request.
Especially as a language school in a city like Duisburg with its high percentage of migrants, we feel obliged to support our language students in thinking and acting in a cosmopolitan, culturally open-minded and solidary way. The focus should not only be on the language deficits of the participants, but also on the different lifeworlds of people from different migration backgrounds, which should be perceived by all participants as equal and with the same appreciation.
Our teachers and secretarial staff therefore see themselves not only as language mediators but also as "bridge builders" between people of different cultures.
