Course description

With a focus on fluency, the General and Semi-Intensive English courses allow you to improve your English giving you a practical understanding of the language and how to use it. You will focus on the 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will improve your level and maximise your ability to use English.

What can you expect on this course?

Real English

Using our teaching methodology, you will learn how English is spoken and used in real-life, day-to-day situations. Focusing on the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening), you will practise conversation skills along with sharpening your grammar, vocabulary, idioms and pronunciation. Learn the English you need to accomplish your aims. Be understood. Get things done.

Improve your ‘thinking time’

‘Thinking time’ - The time that it takes to listen, understand and respond in English. On our General English course, you will shorten your thinking time, making it quicker for you to respond and improve your fluency.

Topic based lessons

Every lesson you take will be based on a specific topic or theme. The language skills and grammar are taught within the framework of the topic and serve to help you apply everything you have learned in a natural way. Simply put, you will learn the correct English to use in specific situations.

Support

Teachers and academic staff will be on hand to give you ongoing support, encouragement, advice and feedback. EC staff create comfortable and confidence-building classroom environments. The role of our teachers is to steadily guide you to your English language goal.

Creative and energetic classes

Relaxed and informal classrooms always create fun and inspiring atmospheres. You will speak confidently and freely while interacting with your classmates. Our professional and dedicated teaching staff will supply you with fun and functional lessons every single day of your course.

Authentic materials

As well as using text books, teachers often supplement lessons with authentic resources such as newspapers, videos, internet and CD's. All of which will give you a clearer understanding of how English is really used.

Learn by doing

At EC we very much believe in students taking a full and active part in lessons. In other words, you will learn by doing. You can expect to fully take part in lessons - there won't be a moment when you are not directly involved. Please note that the first day is mainly focused on pre-test and orientation
This is the timetable of the student:
08:30 - Student arrival and check-in
09:00 - Placement test and interviews
11:00 - Welcome breakfast and orientation with various EC staff members

"Very Good"

Daniele Terracina, student from Italy

Classes: sometime with too many people of the same country
Teachers: really funny and professional
Location: perfect
Facilities: perfect
Activities: uninteresting
Housing: Perfect

I'm very disappointed by the activities, that have been very boring, uninteresting and ripetitive, in 2 months I had just 1 trip(to London), i was expecting much more.

As for the rest, it has been a pleasure to live this experience.

"The school has high value of teaching and organizing. They have friendly and very helpful staff, and modern equipment."

Éva Márton, student from Hungary

There are very good teachers, and the classes are interesting, useful and flexible to needs. The location is very good. It is easy to go there by walking from the accommodation. The facilities and activities are attractive and interesting, and were well-organized.

The staff is very kind, friendly, and helped in everything.
The weakest point for me was the accommodation. It got noisy at night.

Homestaying is the perfect way to experience home-away-from-home. You will enjoy all the comforts of home life: security, comfort and home cooked food, plus, you will have a unique cultural experience (it's a great way to directly learn about British culture). In addition, you will be able to use your English in a natural environment outside of the classroom.

The homestay consists of mixed gender accommodation with single or twin room (if you book with a friend). Each room is furnished with a bed, desk/table, chest of drawers or a wardrobe, mirror and a waste paper basket. Some rooms have TVs.

Additionally, students will have access to common areas such as the lounge, kitchen and dining room. It is important that rooms and living areas are kept neat and tidy. Students also have access to a shared bathroom.

Bed linen and towels are provided by the homestay provider. Our homestay provider will offer one wash per week - anything extra will be at the homestay's discretion.

Internet access is available and telephone access is restricted to incoming calls only.

Homestays are arranged via our accommodation partner, Hosts International, who are registered with the British Council.

A variety of food is provided. Homestay providers may adjust the type of food offered when taking into consideration religious beliefs. It is important to mention this at the time of your booking. Vegetarians, or people with food allergies should specify their eating options upon booking so this can be shared with their host prior to arrival.

Breakfast varies from one homestay to another. It is usually self-service and includes bread, coffee and cereal. Hosts are encouraged to offer students whatever is typical for their home.

You will eat whatever the hosts eat. Dinners are usually quite early in Britain but hosts will inform you of the time when they eat.

Visa support

We cannot apply for visas on behalf of students. However, the school can supply you with all the documentation you need to support your visa application.

If you are studying in the UK for over 11 months, you will receive a reference number called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that you need to submit to the UK embassy along with your General Student Visa application. Students who have successfully booked a language course and have paid their fees will receive a CAS from EC Bristol. Please note that UK law states that a CAS can only be issued to students who intend to pursue English language studies for over 11 months.

If you are studying in the UK for 11 months or less, you have to apply for a special visitor visa called a Student Visitor Visa. As a student visitor, you will not be able to work part-time while studying. If you plan to study in the UK for 11 months or less, a letter of acceptance will be sent to your home address by regular mail at no charge to you. If you wish to receive your paperwork by express mail, you will be charged £ 75 when you register.

Flights and airport transfer

Please note that we do not book flights for our students. If you are researching airfare costs, we recommend using Kayak.com, a search engine that lets you compare flight options from your home country to Bristol based on your budget, schedule and preferences.

Travel insurance

Study abroad worry-free with Language International's health and personal effects insurance coverage. When you book a course with us, you can opt to purchase an international insurance plan that covers not only your health care cost but also loss of your personal belongings. You must book your insurance in advance when you register.
