Course description

We work in small groups, and provide personalized attention to each student. We have developed our own study material, which we combine with carefully selected workbooks. The maximum number of students in a group is 6, but classes are usually smaller. Classes are divided into a 2-hour session focused on grammar, and 2 hours focused on conversational practice. Thanks to the small size of our classes, all students get to actively participate in classes and can make fast progress. We also include some hands-on classes, where we go out and practice in real-life situations.
Study Spanish with us, join our activities, and keep practicing Spanish as you discover the Yucatan Peninsula and the Riviera Maya. Learn Spanish in the morning and enjoy the beach in the afternoon, then take part in our extracurricular activities and practice Spanish while cooking, dancing, playing language games or exploring the area..
Classes start every Monday for those who have some previous knowledge of Spanish, or on the first and third Monday of each month, if you are a true beginner. If you are a beginner but cannot start on the dates set for beginners, you can start any Monday and take 10 private hours or 15 semi-private hours for the same price, until you can join a group.
In order to know more about our students and finding the right level for you as fast as possible , we will send you a placement test to complete without any help and return as soon as possible. You are also welcome to add any comments you consider relevant, about your background in Spanish, expectations, needs, difficulties, etc
in addition to the morning Spanish classes, students take part in two group salsa lessons per week. After the class, they can practice in a salsa bar with their salsa classmates. Since lots of Mexicans attend the salsa class, it´s a also a great way to practice Spanish! Private salsa classes are available upon request, at an additional cost.

"Incredible immersive experience with excellent instructor"

Kristen Castell, student from USA

The lessons were varied, interesting and helped me learn Spanish quickly! Isabel is an excellent instructor and challenged us to communicate in Spanish the whole time. Great mix of lessons and games. I liked the school so much I’m continuing my learning virtually. Would highly recommend.

"99.99% Spanish presentation brought my ears and brain closer together"

Jason Nelson, student from USA

The location is perfectly in the middle of Playa Del Carmen which made silly after-class tourist activities convenient. Anne has created a welcoming and comfortable space to learn. Isa is an excellent teacher who keeps students on-task, focused and progressing through the day's agenda. We had three people in our group and Isa modified her presentation and interactions with us according to our individual abilities. The work was well balanced between grammar, writing, listening and speaking. I highly recommend Agora to those lucky enough to study in Play del Carmen.

"Good language school with nice teachers!"

Paul Horntrich, student from Austria

I liked my stay at Agora! Anne, the head of the school, is super friendly and my teacher Ana was great - funny, motivating and skilled! The classes covered pretty much all of all aspects of language learning, be it reading, writing, listening or speaking! The school is located very central in the city, so if you are living somewhere there the school is good to reach. I can't say anything about housing since I made my own arrangements. The school, however I can recommend!

"Perfect"

Alessandra Grassi, student from Italy

Beautiful experience. The teacher was very kind and really nice. He followed me a lot.

I had a small health problem and they had no problems moving the lesson they missed on Saturday to make me recover. The school could be treated a little more (as a structure) but the most important thing, that is, the position and quality of the teachers is excellent.

I recommend it for sure

"A very professionally run school with a friendly atmosphere and qualified hard working teachers."

William Bradley and Sue Widyaratne , student from Canada

Our teacher Isabel was very good and was so patient and kind - we really liked her. And Anne, the director of the school, was very also very nice, helpful and easy to deal with, as well as other staff we had contact with.

We liked what we learned but would have appreciated knowing the curriculum in advance so that we knew what to expect when we got there. It would have been more helpful to us is we would have covered simple forms of the past, present and future over the two weeks we were there so that we could carry on simple conversations in Spanish.

The toilet sometimes malfunctioned and you had to use a bucket of water to flush it.

"Attentive, high quality teacher; excellent, friendly and flexible management"

Zachary Hoy, student from Canada

I had the pleasure and good fortune of signing up for Agora in Playa del Carmen on my trip in January 2018. Before I arrived, I communicated with Anne, the center manager. She was quick to respond in detail regarding class hours and my needs. She also gave specific instructions on how to find the school. It turned out that my Airbnb was literally in the same building! That made things easier for me.
Unfortunately my trip took a weird twist when I fell down some stairs and broke my ankle on my 2nd day. Of course I was upset that scuba diving was now off the itinerary, not to mention Chichen Itza and many other sights I had planned to see. However I decided to stick it out with the Spanish lessons. I'm very glad I did!
Anne was super helpful and considerate of my situation, helping me acquire essentials like water and groceries at no expense, just out of kindness. However when you sign up for a language school, "kindness" is not the most important thing. Luckily I learned that they are also very professional, with very qualified teachers.
My teacher was Ana. As a language teacher myself, I think I have a pretty good idea of what to look for, and Ana checks all the boxes and more. In addition to being very friendly and easygoing, she has a very concise grasp of that language, and is definitely a very experienced teacher. She was very responsive to my learning rate of learning, adjusting quickly to suit my pace. I suppose I was in a bit of a weird situation since to begin I wasn't even A1, but I had already memorized about 30 verbs and maybe 100 nouns. I just couldn't really string them together confidently yet. Ana adjusted perfectly. Unfortunately, due to my broken foot, I wasn't really able to participate in any social activities, so I can't comment on those.
All in all I would absolutely continue my lessons here if I had the opportunity.

"Great time diving and learning Spanish"

Veronica Davis, student from USA

I spent a week in Playa del Carmen. I did the Advanced Diving Certification and private Spanish lessons. The school coordinated everything for me. I spent my mornings diving and my afternoons learning Spanish. The school was a walking distance to the housing.

"Fantastic"

pierre Marquestaut

I worked in Playa for 6 months, and took personal courses with Teresa, a professor at Agora.

I found the reception nice. The classrooms were equipped with air-conditioning so it was a very good atmosphere for work. I was very happy because it was important for me to be relaxed for learning.

Moreover, Agora is in the city center so you don't lose any time going to your classroom. They give you material to learn, and you have many activities to do, some which make you use your head in many ways, which is good!

The team gave me a personal schedule, which was adapted to my progression and my availability. They were very accommodating with the students.

My last point, but not the least, was the good mood, the vivacity, and the carefulness from Teresa my teacher! She is a perfect teacher.
I recommend this school for sure!

"Fun three weeks"

Eva Bohg

We did the intensive Spanish program for three weeks from 9:00-13:00 Monday-Friday. Our teacher Lulú was great! She is very good at teaching and the classes with her were a lot of fun. Everyday we did two hours of grammar and two hours of speaking. The classes were very small, which was nice because we got a lot of attention. Besides those classes they also offered activities, which is a nice way to explore the area. We went to Ek Balam and Akumal, which was a lot of fun. The school is located in Playa Del Carmen, but it is easily accessible even when staying in Cancún by taking the PlayaExpress. We learned a lot during those three weeks and we would definitely return!

Hola, We enjoyed having you as students this summer and it´s great to hear that you enjoyed the experience and learned a lot. We do hope to see you again at Agora!

"Superb welcome, great availability, and great passion of the staff that I met."

Christian Cheval

I spent 3 1/2 months in Playa del Carmen. Upon arriving, I did not speak Spanish at all. Now as I leave, I feel I managed pretty well for all my current needs.

I enjoyed the cheap formula that gave me tools for my everyday life with local people.

The welcoming and availability of the owner was extraordinary. The owner was a person who loves others and who does not count his time. I also really appreciated the professionalism of the teacher.

I was also able to make friends with other teachers in this school, and I felt the school was like home with their sense of help and sharing.

The premises are ideally located in the center, which was close to everything. The land and the classes are “North American.”

I do not have any negative points!

I have fond memories of my time at this school. Anne, the owner, has become a friend to me and we remain in contact with each other.
