Course description

Also known as “al-fus’haa”, MSA is the language used throughout the Arab world for specialized functions, i.e. instruction, the electronic and printed media and formal situations. Although it is not used for interpersonal communication in any of the Arab-speaking countries, learning MSA before any of the several spoken regional and local dialects which vary considerably from area to area provides learners with two advantages. First, a good foundation in MSA facilitates the acquisition of any dialect a learner might wish to learn later. Second, unlike local dialects, MSA is readily understood anywhere in the Arab world. Our MSA program is tailored to meet the needs of all students interested in learning or improving Standard Arabic. It provides them with the necessary knowledge and training to acquire full and clear understanding of the Arabic language system. The MSA program consists of six levels of studies; each level is divided into three successive and progressive sublevels. The system of levels in this program is structured according to the U.S. university system and to the guidelines of our European and international partner institutions. In order to better meet the needs of all our students, our teachers were trained to teach with all the best MSA language textbooks available today, such as “Al-Kitaab fii Ta’allum al-’Arabiyya”, which is our main textbook, “Ahlan Wa Sahlan” and “Al-Arabiya al-Mu’asira”.

* If the number of students is insufficient (less than three), Dar Loughat shall reduce studying hours for group classes in the following fashion:

"Useful"

Anna G, student from UK

I spent three weeks at Dar Loughat and learned a lot both from classes and the activities that they offer in the afternoons. My teacher was great and the school is in the city's center. I will come back!

"Amazing experience and dive into moroccan culture"

Camille Schwarz, student from Germany

The langugage class was overall an amazing experience. My class was very small, due to the lack of other students in my language level I was taught in private lessons. Which gave me the space and time to ask all questions and practice a lot. At the same time it was also demanding and intense to focus because of no other students to share the lesson with. I got along really well with my teacher Naima. She was very attentive to me individually. I liked the afternoon activities a lot, to get more insight into moroccan culture and way of life, see the surrounding and meet other people. Regarding accommodation, I can not rate Dar Loughat as I organized my own stay in a hostel.

"It was very good, in all respects"

Catherine Mayeur, student from Morocco

I took private lessons for three weeks in dârija and fushâ.
Rich personality of the teachers, adaptability to my objectives.
Perfect location.

There were no activities, because of the Covid, but it's easy to discover Tetouan on your own, and my teachers helped me.

"Very good experience"

Sandra Sánchez Jiménez, student from Spain

I spent 3 weeks in Dar Loughat learning darija with teacher Jamal. He is very kind, he knows how to answer questions and and I liked his way of teaching. I really improved my speaking and enjoyed with the classes. I stayed with a family, the house was very close to the school and it was easy to walk overthere. Also in the afternoon the school did activities with the students such as guided visits, meetings, pronunciation and writing workshop etc. I will repeat without a doubt soon, it has been a very good experience and I recomend it.

"Combine fun and language skills in one place, in the middle of Tétouan and add up experienced and super friendly staff - dar loughat"

Ina Schneckenreither, student from Austria

had a great week - luckily it was possible to just do fuzha classes for one week since i was time limited
and because it was off season, i had the pleasure of being tought alone by the teacher which lead to an accelerated learning experience.
over all i have to highlight the friendliness and professionality of all the staff members. since organisational matters can be a bit of a struggle, i really appreciated to had a whatsapp contact where things could be cleared out easily.
hotel** was basic and sufficient, walking distance and breaky included.
thank you for everything and im very happy to have found a place to come back to - inshalla!

"It surpassed my expectations!"

Naim, student from USA

The course was intensive (5 days/week, 2 hrs a day) and I was able to choose my time (9-11am). As i was the only one following the Darija (Moroccan Arabic) course, I got a private teacher.
The teacher (Ali) was wonderful! After our first session together he understood I was really interested in getting to know the social and cultural fabric of Morocco. He was very generous in sharing his experiences and encouraged me to share my knowledge and experiences as well.
I did not use any of the facilities nor did I need any. I did not participate with the social activities as it wasn't my first time in Morocco and, in particular, in Tetouan. I didn't use any housing as I stayed in our family house in Tetouan.

"Fantastic week at Dar Loughat in Tetouan!"

Annemarie Postma, student from Netherlands

My week in Tetouan was really great. The school was very professional, and I have learned a lot although I was there only for one week. My teacher Imen is a great teacher, with a lot of patience. She was able to teach us/me at our/my personal level. Because of her method I was able to learn a lot which I still remember returned at home. The activities were fine, I liked the couscousdiner at the end of the week. And my hostfamiliy, the Khatib family, was adorable, the best place to stay as a student. They have supported me very well.

"My stay in Tetouan was excellent. I want to return next year."

Nancy Elisabeth Barwell, student from France

I really liked the lessons, the skill and the kindness of the teachers. I was very well housed in a lovely lady who cooks very well. I could walk from home to school without any problem.

I wished there were more visits to the city and its museums.
Excuse my answer a bit late but I'm overworked right now
cordially

"Wonderful experience"

Hisako Kuwazuru, student from Japan

The town was small but beautiful. It's also possible to go on a trip to various places.
My teacher was charming! I didn't know a lot of Arabic but tried her best to understand.
I regret I should have stayed longer!!

"I learned a lot and really enjoyed my time in Tetouan!"

Rachel Comte, student from USA

The experience overall was great - I even stayed an extra week! The city is very nice, and I stayed in a beautiful riad (though I booked it on my own). I ended up in a class by myself - just me and my teacher - which at first I was unhappy with because I wanted to meet others, but it turned out to be good because we got to go at my own pace. Ekram my teacher was exceptional. The school is a nice place and in a great location (center of town). They planned afternoon activities so you could meet people that way, though it would be nice if they had a student lounge so people could meet each other or chat on a daily basis. That would be my only suggestion to the school...sometimes you never see people b/c our classes are at different times. Anyway, it was great and I plan to go back and keep studying darija - I made a ton of progress in 5 weeks!

"Well established school with relaxed friendly learning atmosphere."

Tom, student from UK

The administration of the school was good - they arranged a driver to pick me up, although quite late, and last minute. The school, teachers and area were all very conducive to a learning atmosphere. However, the organisation of lessons day-to-day was a bit hap hazard and there was no real lesson plan - I'd turn up, and we'd do something different each day. I was only there for two weeks, so its probably better designed for long-term students.

"My emotions there is no limit , I hope it was not our last meeting !!!"

Vitaliya Akatova, student from Russia

I've always wanted to go to Morocco this summer and study the Arabic language I chose Morocco! And I have never regretted that I went to this country! Morocco is a fascinating country with a very ancient history, where friendly and very hospitable people live, and of course it's unusual nature! With regard to schooling DAR LOUGHAT I liked learning there, all their teachers were native speakers, apart from that everybody speaks English, Spanish and French, which simplifies the task of those who has difficulty in speaking Arabic! I was left in awe of the school, every time we came to the school, there was a feeling that you are home, we were all greeted with bright smiles and warm hugs and always had the opportunity to practice the language! It is a pity that the street is not possible place for practice, because the locals speak a dialect, but that does not stop me from practicing other languages, because almost everyone speaks French and Spanish! Also the school offers many trips for the weekend, where you can get acquainted with the culture of Morocco and look at the magnificent nature, which to be honest I admire its beauty! Without a doubt whether to go to Morocco or not? Simply collect your bags and take a good vibe.

"Great school with amazing people that make sure you know they take care of you and will always be there for you."

Demi Roefs, student from Netherlands

I liked the teachers, but the material not so much. I prefer not to study from copied sheets, but rather from a textbook.
Also, many of the students at Dar Loughat are non-native English speakers, so it was challenging to read the long texts from the materials. Personally, I'd suggest a more colorful/simple book, especially for beginners.
I loved the location of the school. Not only because it was close to my home-stay, but also close to the main street so it was easy to find a place for lunch and since the school is situated next to the church, it is easy to find your way.
I haven't participated on many activities, only couscous on Friday (delicious!) and we went hiking in the mountains, twice. The guide was amazing! It was obvious that he does not just know the place very well, but he also loved talking about it and explaining things about the surroundings. There were some problems with the home-stay family, but none of that was the school's fault. They were always ready to assist me and also offered to find me another host family if needed.

"An amazing and very interesting stage."

Heidi Nolden, student from Germany

Everybody in that school was very nice and helpful. I was a total beginner in the Arabian language, so I got a teacher of my own. She was very nice and patient with me. She explained very well and she had always very lively examples. I enjoyed her course very much.
Next time I'll book another course I would like to have her as my teacher.

All the other students I got to know were also very kind and it was amazing to meet young people from so many different countries with so many different experiences.

Marika Dell'Acqua, student from Italy

I spent only two weeks in Tetouan, but it was a beautiful stay. I was surprised to learn Arabic so quickly. The classes were funny and teacher really motivating. I was in the hotel Panorama, and all staff was very kind and tried to provide me everything. I hope to come back as soon as possible to improve my skills and meeting my new Moroccan friends.

Thank you very much

Students with specific needs, such as dietary restrictions or allergies should indicate these on their application forms. It may not always be possible to provide a home-stay within walking distance of Dar Loughat. In selecting host families, we do not look for luxury or comfort in the material sense. Nevertheless, students can count on personal attention, help and advice. Please note that our number of home-stay families is limited, and that during busy times you may need to be placed on a waiting list.

Other concerns: Participants who feel they may not be able to respect home-stay rules or may have difficulties adapting to life with a Moroccan family should consider other accommodation options. Among the difficulties experienced by past participants:
Lack of privacy;
Unfamiliar meal times and dietary habits;
Location of host family (in some cases involving a bus ride to Dar Loughat).

For the overwhelming number of past participants such inconveniences were far outweighed by the positive experience of living with a Moroccan family, whose hospitality is legendary for good reason.
