"Highly positive and interesting experience."

David Marsh, student from France

I spent three weeks in Venice (Aug-Sep 2024) where at the Istituto Venezia I had daily one-to-one one-hour classes for complete beginners with Giulia. She was an excellent teacher who guided and encouraged in equal measure. Thanks to Giulia, I feel I made a good start to learning basic Italian and will build on what she taught me over the weeks and months ahead as I continue learning at home.

A very good contact to answer all my questions beforehand. Very convenient to propose housing in Canareggio, a part of Venice I may have not visited otherwise. 3 hour Italian lessons in the morning and visiting Venice (first time for me!), a very interesting combo

"Would do it all over again!"

Jennifer Phillips-Bacher, student from Afghanistan

I really enjoyed studying at Istituto Venezia. I took both the group intensive course and a daily private lesson.

The teachers were all excellent. I studied with Elisa, Alessandro and Betta. The classes were a good mix of grammar, conversation and listening comprehension. My private lessons were entirely guided by me and what I wanted help with; Betta was exceptionally patient and flexible.

The school is in a great location in Campo Santa Margherita. It's close to many bars and restaurants which made our break-time even better. The morning pausa gave a good opportunity to get a coffee and chat with classmates. The only reason I didn't give the facilities a full 5 star rating is because the bathrooms were occasionally in a state of disrepair - nothing major, just minor issues.

I took part in 2 of the cooking classes and 3 of the guided history walks. These were great and pitched at a level that most everyone would understand. Plus it was good to get out of the classroom and learn about Venice's history, architecture and food!

I arranged housing through Airbnb, as neither the student housing or alternative accommodation was available during my weeks in Venice (unfortunately)!

Thank you also for the suggestion about bathrooms, we are going to do those minor repairs as you suggested, we appreciate your remark.

hopefully we are going to see you again here in Venice or in Trieste.
Have a wonderful day, a big hug from all of us :)

"I would recommend it."

Tatiana Penzo, student from Norway

The teacher was everything. Giulia! She is the reson Why I rate my experience as very good.

I think the material could have been better. You could have made it as a compendium.
And with a little story of Venezia and recommend where to find a gods pizza and coffee and what to see.

The activities in the evening could have been better. You could
Have arrangements as meet-up at restaurants or bars so that we students could
Get to know each other better.

My accommodation was bad! I wish you had described that the way from the convent to the school was 33 minutes as it in fact was- not 20 as you say in the site. Also that I had read the information better.

Buongiorno Tatiana,

we are happy that classes with Giulia were so fine and that you have learned a lot.

We appreciate your words and suggestions about walking time to the residence (I personally walked from the school to the residence and it took me 25 minutes, so I updated that detail on our website).

We will try to add up some of the activities you mentioned, even though most of students already decide to meet up at the restaurant or at bars together: surely they are going to like it a lot.

ciao e buona giornata.

"Two months of Italian language lessons at Instituto Venezia was a dream come true."

Jennifer Dolan, student from USA

I really enjoyed my time at Instituto Venezia. The teachers were all very knowledgeable, kind, and patient (as were the administrative personell). Multiple strategies for teaching: reading (handouts), video, audio, games. The lessons were all in Italian. Regarding the events, I attended the passegiata twice and the cooking school four times. It was challenging for me to comprehend the lectures during the passegiata because I was only in Livello I and II. I loved the cooking class. The culinary instructors were so much fun. The culinary classes were in Italian as well, so I was able to continue to practice my Italian outside of the morning class structure. One of the culinary instructors commented that my Italian had improved significantly from the first to the fourth class, so that was encouraging. I rented an apartment near S. Giacomo, so I had a nice walk to and from school every day (not too far). One thing that might be helpful is a text book (even if they just recommend multiple textbooks for us to purchase on our own).

"Althoug I had just one week of lessons, I feet I have learned a lot."

Lynn Grant, student from Switzerland

It was my first time at Istituto Venezia and I'm very happy to have discover that school. It is perfectly located, not too far from Academia bridge. I had just done one week of lessons, but it was a great review and learning experience for me. We were a small group, some students have been there for three weeks. At first I thought I will not be able to follow or catch up, but it was a good level for me. The lessons focus on oral, but we still had lessons with grammar, which we could practice after.
The teacher was well organized and proposed different activities for enhance our learning experience. I had an hour lesson one on one with a teacher, this was very helpful to practice and to verify my comprehension.

"Tres belle expérience dans un cadre exceptionnel"

Maria Esnault, student from France

"I loved my time in Venice"

Tereza Okruhlicová, student from Slovakia

The classes were very helpful, the teachers always nice. I lived in campus for a week and then two weeks with a host, both experiences were great. The school was close to where I lived. I honestly think that I never had to walk anywhere for more than 15 or 20 minutes. I picked the best time to visit the city as I got to see the Regata Storica and the Venice Film Festival as well. Overall my experience in Venice was the best I could have hoped for and I hope to be back soon.

Margaret Ripley, student from USA

The classes were a size that supported group interaction as well as group pairing of activities. The facilities were adequate. It was a relaxed class atmosphere and enjoyable to have a break where we could go together to the local Plaza. The teachers were very supportive. The afternoon activities were varied and enjoyable. I would take the class again.

"It was great."

Bénédicte MAIRE, student from France

The school is very well located. The classrooms are agreeable. The teachers are following a very interesting method, based on communication. I really improved. The city was quite crowded but some quarters were really quiet. I first had a bedroom in a really busy, touristic and noisy place. When I asked to change lodgings, the school immediately found another room corresponding to my needs. The cultural program was, although interesting, a bit disappointing : I expected more activities (visits of museums or palaces). Nevertheless, the school offered interesting walks fest days, which was very nice of them. I do recommend very warmly Istituto Venezia.

"Excellent experience with very competent and motivated teachers in a nice environment"

ANNE -F. A, student from Switzerland

I visited the Instituto Venezia twice, for two short time periods (2 x 2 weeks ) and took private courses.

On both occasions, I was very fortunate to benefit form excellent and motivated teachers. Both were very competent, very attentive to my needs, very motivated as well as creative in their teaching. Their attitude was supportive and facilitated learning. Thanks to them I have made very good and rapid progress in my language skills and they have helped me to identify how to improve my Italian with a genuine interest for my needs.

I am also very grateful to the school for having organized these courses in a rather short time notice.

The school building is a bit old fashion in style but well adapted to teaching. I appreciated the non casual, welcoming atmosphere. Extra- courses activities are organized for the students.

The school is ideally situated in the centre of Dorsoduro, Venezia. I can warmly recommend it.

"To live a new life in a new city was a great experience"

Mara Mallien, student from Switzerland

In the classes we had a lot of fun and the teacher tried to involve all of the students and looked after the slower ones. But I think it was really difficult to teach us, because all the students were on a different level, and for me personally it was a lot too easy. My grammar skills were a lot higher than what we did in class together, but because I was there only for a week it was not absolutely necessary to change the class. All in all, the teachers tried it and I understand that it wasn't easy. But if you really want to learn the language I think maybe individual lessons would be a good idea.
The location of the school is very good because coffee shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets are near by. It's a good place to meet up with your friends and from there you can easily walk to every place you want.
Every day I had to walk twenty minutes to school and sometimes that was a bit unpractical, but it was totally fine and the walk every morning wakes you up :).
The housing was also very good. I lived in an apartment with a lady and a young man. They were really nice and I also liked the apartment a lot. I had a big room for myself, and I could come and go at any time I wanted.

"Rewarding experience"

André SANCHEZ, student from France

I registered over a period of 4 weeks in order to complete a complete level.
The first week is a review of the previous level which I think is important if you haven't practiced for a long time, which was my case.
The method of evaluation of the level done beforehand via Zoom (covid obliges!) seemed to me to be efficient because it was representative of my previous knowledge and I felt globally in phase with the other students.
I had 2 different teachers during this period who were very pedagogical, cordial, understanding but also demanding about the program to follow. In spite of the unavoidable grammar phase, the exercises in class are always fun (we even sang!) and a large place is left for discussion, which is the most important thing. The average number of students per class was 5 and the basic principle is to always use the Italian language to communicate with each other. The teachers make sure that there is always a round table during these exercises so that everyone can speak and also ask for further explanations. There is even evening homework with review the next day! but always in a good mood... The rhythm of the classes in the morning from 9h to 10h30 and 11h to 12h30 is balanced and leaves half an hour to drink a coffee and get to know each other better.
For personal reasons I couldn't attend the afternoon activities but I consulted them on the notice board and saw that they were diversified and often in line with the events in Venice.
For the same reasons, I found accommodation on my own.
Finally, all the supervising staff (such as the secretariat and the coordinating professor) is really attentive.
I am thinking of repeating this experience next year after having "digested" everything I learned this time.

"The teachers were the best thing about the school for me, all of them very dedicated and great fun"

Nynke Hendriks, student from Netherlands

I loved the location of the school on the campo santa margarita, it was a lovely walk from the Santa Marta residenza every morning, the teachers were all lovely and great. I participated in many of the after-school activities with Anna and Marina, both of whom were fantastically knowledgeable about Venice, its history, art, culture etc, loved those tours!

One thing I would have liked was easier access to tea and coffee during class, because two hours is a long time and I need beverages.
Also, the first week of January we had 5 hours a day to make up for Monday the 6th of January (public holiday) and it was too much, everyone felt that.

Other than that, I had a fantastic time at the Istituto Venezia throughout January.

Dear Nynke,

we thank you for your positive reply.
I know, the first week was a special one, we wrote in our calendar that there would be 5 hours a day, maybe in the future we will offer a substitute activity replacing classes, like we do on most festive days.

We hope to see you again at school, I will tell teachers you enjoyed your classes and activities in the afternoon too. We are also very happy to see you liked very much the housing in residence Santa Marta.

Have a lovely day :)

All the best,

Elisa Carrer

"Teachers cannot manage different levels of students in one classroom. The classes are too long without breaks."

Jill Hummelstein, student from USA

The housing was good. The front desk needs to work on their social skills and manners. They were helpful. And sometimes rude.

The first week of school the classes were five hours a day, That’s too long to concentrate or have a good time.

And there needs to be a book and listening and repeat exercises that the student can do at any time.

Dear Jill,

we are sorry to hear that you did not find the classes helpful or interesting, especially when the school direction agreed with your request to convert your group course into an individual one, because you said it was too much. Our teacher Simona did her best to help you with listening and repeating.
Our group courses in the morning are always 4 hours a day, with a break halfway in the morning.
The first week was an exception, we wrote this into our calendar, 5 hours a day for the group course were organized to make up for the lost hours on the National Holiday of Monday, 6th January.

As for front desk/secretary, we are sorry if you felt we were not friendly, we did our best too when you were ill, we called and made a reservation with the doctor for you, looked for the information you asked for.

We are glad you found housing and location beautiful, if you ever change your mind about the school, you will be welcome back. We suggest to maybe book an individual course for the future rather than a group course, so the teacher can focus on what you feel is most important to you.

Best regards,

Elisa Carrer

"Great teachers, made a lot of progress in my language knowledge"

Fruzsina German, student from Poland

.The classes were scheduled according to proper level, I learned something new everyday. Maybe speaking skills were the only part where due to big group, we did not have a lot of opportunity for practice. Otherwise, all parts were useful and worth attending. I would not recommend going there for less than 2 weeks, as one week is not enough to see any progress. Also liked that there were programs everyday after school, I liked that my teachers gave me useful advices on Venice and also shared tradiitons.

Grazie mille per la tua splendida recensione,

"One of the best ones I've had lately."

Josipa Musura, student from Spain

I absolutely loved my classes. Both of my teachers were amazing, very professional and nice to each and every one of us in the group. They made our classes fun and I can honestly say that I learned a lot in one week, regarding both Italian language and culture.
We had several activities organised within the school, I had lot of fun participating in one workshop about Venice culture and society.
As far as the location is concerned, it was 30 min away from my homestay walking, approx 25 min form Piaza di San Marco, which was fine because you're basically in the city center and you can move around easily.

At last, housing. The lady was nice, we didn't talk that much but she completely respected my privacy. My room was pretty nice, the rest of the apartment was ok but a bit old fashioned. Also, it was really cold in Venice that week and it would have been nice to had had an option of heating, because it was also freezing cold at home.

And one last thing, the internet. There was no wifi, the lady offered me her modem and gave me one cable to connect to the Internet, which I did, but it didn't work most of the time. I talked to the lady about it, but she told me that it worked with other people and that was it. She didn't even try to solve the problem. For future occasions, I would suggest to try to deal with this issue as the Internet these days is very much essential for everybody abroad.

Dear Josipa,

we thank you for your message and we appreciate your review. We will try to talk to Marina and see if she is willing to switch to wi-fi system, because we know the importance of being connected when you travel (even though many of the ladies hosting our students have not yet realized about this, sorry!).

We will try to do our best in finding a more suitable accommodation whenever you wish to come back.

Best regards,

Elisa
