"The school has potential, but its leaders have a lot of work to do."

Olesya Shaydurova, student from Ukraine

Good day,

I would like to provide feedback on the course, focusing on four key areas: academic instruction, extracurricular activities, accommodation, and the student experience.

Academic Instruction - 5/5
I would like to commend the academic portion of the course by awarding it a perfect score of 5. The teaching delivered by Luther McGinnis and Patricia I. Turner was exceptional. The sessions were highly interactive and engaging. The topic on public speaking stood out to me as particularly valuable, with practical exercises and tips that were immensely useful. We also covered several grammar topics and expanded our vocabulary significantly, which greatly enhanced the learning experience.

Extracurricular Activities and Excursions - 4/5
Alongside the academic curriculum, we had a number of training sessions and city excursions. While not all 6 or 7 excursions were equally engaging, they generally provided an excellent opportunity to practice English and network with local students. However, the scheduling did not always align with the program's stated times (13:00 to 15:00), which is an area for improvement. Overall, I would rate this section a 4, as some excursions were not as stimulating as expected.

Accommodation - 1/5
Unfortunately, the accommodation was the most disappointing aspect of the course. Upon arrival, the apartment was in extremely poor condition. The kitchen, bathroom, and toilet were filthy, with spills, dust, and trash scattered throughout. My bed was unmade, and the linens were stained and unclean, accompanied by an unpleasant odor. The floor was littered with hair and garbage. Despite raising these issues, it took two weeks for the cleaning manager to address them, leaving us in unsanitary conditions during that time. Moreover, I was placed in a room with three other students, contrary to the advertisement which stated I would only share with one person. Due to these issues, I can only give the accommodation a rating of 1.

Students – 1/5
Unfortunately, as a Ukrainian from Kyiv, I had a deeply negative experience due to being placed in the same accommodation as a student from Russia. This individual actively supported Russia, the war against Ukraine, and Putin's regime, and openly expressed hatred towards Ukrainians. As someone from Kyiv, who faces daily air raids and bomb shelter alarms due to Russia's missile attacks on civilians, this was incredibly distressing. Russia has killed over 1,000 Ukrainian children, and I have personally lost my uncle, friends, and colleagues in this war. Being subjected to this student’s propaganda and hate speech was unbearable. It’s difficult to fully describe the emotional toll this situation took on me. I don’t understand how such a critical factor was overlooked in the accommodation process. I tried to focus on my studies and avoid political discussions, but it was impossible to ignore the discomfort. While I made several wonderful and funny friends from other countries, the experience with this particular student left a lasting negative impression.

Overall Conclusion: 2.75/5
While the school has potential, it is clear that the leadership must address several issues. I learned a lot and made great friends, but can I wholeheartedly recommend this school to others? Unlikely, though I’ll consider it a valuable learning experience. I hope that my feedback will be carefully analyzed to help improve the program.

I want to express my gratitude to the course for offering me a new experience, and I must say that the Netherlands is an incredibly beautiful country.

Thank you! Wishing you a wonderful end to your week!

With respect and love,
Olesya
Your student
