Established in 1988, English Language Academy is one of the leading language Centres in Malta. Nicknamed “the School with a Heart”, we are proud of the family atmosphere students find in our classrooms and amongst our administrative staff. ELA has always been the “home away from home” for students from over 78 different countries. Our mission is to continue providing a variety of high-level educational programmes in a family-like atmosphere that is conducive to learning; keeping up-to-date with the latest technology and quality assurance methods. To give all our valued students an even better experience, ELA joined the Berlitz family and we are extremely excited to combine ELA's strengths with the pioneering, fully immersive Berlitz Method.
The Berlitz method
The Berlitz method has proven time and time again that it is one of the best way to learn a language fluently and efficiently. The English Language is presented in the context of real-life situations. We focus on the language skills our students will need, to navigate daily interactions, rather than academic translations or grammar rules. This allows them to gain confidence to speak the language fluently and quicker. The teacher also guides the students through a process of practice and presentation to help them quickly absorb what they have learned and progress to the next level.
Our teaching team consists of a group of highly motivated, qualified and committed professionals who are always pushing students to maximise their learning experience through continuous interaction.
Berlitz | ELA is centrally located, with a few minutes’ walk from the promenade and close to all amenities (restaurants, cafes, shopping centres etc). The academy consists of 27 bright air-conditioned classes, fully equipped with the latest technology and interactive whiteboards. Our small class sizes mean that we can tailor the learning environment to fit the students’ individual needs.
We offer the full services offered by larger schools, including accommodation, a full leisure programme, airport transfers plus assistance from our representatives who are fluent in most languages. The main school building is fully air-conditioned with a good reception area, video facilities, a canteen and study area. The school also offers free internet and WiFi facilities to all ELA students. We are open all year round from Monday to Friday except on public holidays.
Berlitz- ELA has partnerships with the following universities and colleges in Malta. You can gain full or conditional acceptance into one of these institutions.
The nationality and age mix at Berlitz | English Language Academy varies over different time periods, courses and levels. Throughout the year, the average age is 30. In the summer, the average age is 24.
Berlitz-ELA is located in the coastal town of Gzira, opposite the University of Malta Sports facilities. It is also conveniently located within 10 minutes walking distance from the Gzira/Sliema harbour and one of Malta's most popular shopping centers.
The teachers and the reception man were very kinds.
The classes were intesting.
Although I only went one week, and few hours, I think I learn things.
And they reccomemded what to visit.
There are a English tour guide with good timetable for the student, and good prices.
The camp in Malta was an unforgettable experience! Beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and a wonderful atmosphere made every day full of joy and new adventures. The camp program was well organized, offering a variety of activities - from water sports to trips to local attractions.

Housing was terrible, ist was just Business for hostfamilie
Dear Shokhsanam,
Thanks for your comment.
We are surprised to see that you think the host family was just "business" to you. Unfortunately this website does not allow me to insert a photo of your note that you left the family, but I have typed your message word by word as you can see below:
"Dear XXX, Thank you so much for professional service and delicious foods. It's from me! Enjoy it :)" and signed with your signature.
The friendly atmosphere was in school.
4 teachers taught me. Unfortunately, one teacher Frank (an older man from England) was not a very good experience for me (because he only talks about himself), when he asked me what I needed to improve, I told him grammar and speaking, unfortunately, I spent him all week (what I was she had him) listened to his life, what he likes to bake. The other people from him had the same opinion. Unfortunately, two women left school because of this experience.
Frank's opposite was Francesca, the best teacher I ever had.
There were no activities within the school. It could have caused a covid situation.
I lived with a woman (within the housing family), who was very friendly, I felt at home there.
The school was very close to my resident (about 3 minutes)
School facilities - corresponded to normal (nothing terrible or extra)
Getting to know Malta was a beautiful experience for me, I plan to go (thanks to my work) again in June. And maybe some of our colleagues will also go.
I was able to do two weeks of distance learning given the covid context.
Teaching is fun and really helps improve.
I think I will repeat the face-to-face experience to fully appreciate the lessons.
In terms of improvement, I would have appreciated being able to define / express myself on my learning preferences and my type of memory, which could allow to have a teacher in total adequacy with my way of learning and thus learn more easily. Having the learners' wishes / work goals can also be positive.
Even if the 2nd point is more easily achieved in individual lessons or in two-three.
I take nothing but positive from this experience!
I love ELA and my teacher Annabel;Sultana; othres teachers also and location.
next year i will go back to study and use my volcher from classes that i didn’t have due to the school having closed
Dear Vanessa,
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We are very pleased that you have enjoyed your lessons with us and look forward to welcoming you back to the school with a heart once the pandemic is over..unless you would like to join our online lessons :)
Wishing you all the very best and please keep safe!
Thanks and regards
Classes in size are suitable for 5-10 students, not more. During two weeks in the school I had four teachers and they were all very professional and friendly. Thank them! I can not say anything special about the location, 20 minutes walk from the hotel where I lived. I did not take part in activities. I got from the school free of charge tour Malta by night and it was exelent! There is in the school a good cafe where they offer delicious and cheap coffee. On the first day we had a short meeting with school crew, where they told us about school and activities. During my stay at school I contacted couple of times with Adrian and he was very friendly and helped me solve the problem.

I have been in AFA for 3 weeks, 40 hours - Business English.
My main teacher there spoke native English.
I was in group with other 4 people from Poland, Japan, Germany, and Russia - very nice folks.
My host family was very friendly and respectful. The duration between my house in Malta and ALA was around 20 minutes.
Dear Milen,
Thank you so much for your review!
We do in fact pride ourselves in keeping the classes small and international so that students who visit ELA can maximize their stay here. Moreover, all our teachers are highly qualified and very experienced.
It was a great pleasure having you with us and we wish you all the very best :)
Thanks and regards
It was a good experience, I learn a new language because before came to Malta I didn’t speak English and now I feel really happy for my progress. In my point of view the new location is good, however the last location in Sliema it was perfect because has a lot of amenities.
In general the lessons was good, excellent staff of teachers, the staff in general it was always polite and helping when you have some inconvenience. The School should be work in integrate more the students.
Dear Andres,
Thank you very much for your review!
As you rightly pointed out, ELA has always been very strong in the academic area and we pride ourselves in delivering engaging lessons which ultimately help our students improve in the language which will undoubtedly open many doors and opportunities.
At ELA we also have a fun packed activities programme for all our students. In fact, activities are organised everyday both in the afternoon and in the evening. However, we have taken your constructive comment on board and we will be marketing these programmes more with students.
It was a pleasure to have you join our family at ELA and we wish you all the very best for your future endeavours :)
Best regards,
I would prefere more games during the day, not only at the end of the course. The location was ok. The teacher was ok.

Dear Mr. Pietsch,
Thank you for your feedback on our courses. We will be forwarding this to our Director of Studies who will ensure that your feedback for more language-based educational games in the class gets passed down to our teaching staff.
Nonetheless, I am pleased to inform you that we offer a fun packed-activities programme for all our students. These activities take place in the afternoon and in the evening as well as during the weekends, keeping our students gainfully occupied whilst interacting with students of different nationalities and getting to know Maltese history and culture. I am also pleased to inform you that these activities change weekly.
We hope to see you again next year, and please note that all of our students are more than welcome to give us feedback during their course, which generally leads to immediate results in the area in question.
I am a beginners. This week was for me good decision.
I was 8 hour a day and can more learn.
the course´s was right divided up.
The teachers were excellent.
I met new friends.
Malta is very nice island.
the host family were very friendly and helpful.
This was very nice week.
Now, I must learn still more.

From June 4 to June 15 at school I really enjoyed studying. I learned many new words, I heard the speech of English teachers , met new friends. in my group there were 7 people, most of them were Russian children. we tried to talk only in English. Teachers speak only English, they explain everything, I understood them. Classes are small, clean and air conditioners work there. I liked studying and I want to come to Malta to continue my studies

This is my first trip to Malta, and I got somehow like allergy with insects there. If there had been a pre alert, I would have been better prepared.
It will help if there is a more precious examination for the new comers, which is able judge their level and put the same in the same class.
In general I consider that the teachers were good professionals. Some weeks we were 10 mates in the class and the dynamic was difficult to us. Other times the majority of the students were from Germany then I had to adapt the german accent and requirements. I prefer the mixture of nationalities. During the course I had to sufer the alteration changes in the school, sometimes it disturbed the classes. In other hand I didn't feel monitoring about my improvent and the planning of my course.
When I've had some problem about accommodation or in other sense, the management and administration were very polite and efficient. Therefore I only have good words about that
the school was useful, but outside the school I did not know how to practice the language. maybe that's why next apartment for better placement

The courses aren't good organized, that's why you note a big difference between the students in one class. The teacher, I'm sorry to say that, don't have enough experience with teaching except some of the business English teachers. I would like to have harder exercises and more new words, I tried to change my situation but all of my trying got nothing. The administration wasn't enough helpful.
With housing the host family was nice but the eating was at all unbearable, doesn't tasty. The beautiful thing was only the international atmosphere between the students, but that's alone wasn't enough.
Dear Mr Al Awihee,
First and foremost we would like to thank you for your feedback. We at ELA are always seeking ways of improving on the service we offer our students, as can be attested by the other comments on this page.
I would like to start by saying that ELA has been established since 1988 and is a founding member of FELTOM, the local organisation representing the most important schools on the island). ELA’s academic staff complement is fully qualified as per the regulations laid down by the ELT Council within the Education Department. In addition, our teachers have to attend regular CPD training to ensure they keep abreast of the latest pedagogical approaches to the teaching of English. We also observe our teachers at work and have regular staff development meetings in order to ensure that a very high standard is kept. It is in the school’s interest that this is so, since our best adverts are the many satisfied clients that leave our school content with the quality of language teaching they receive.
As you well know, on the first day you had to sit for a student placement test which consisted of two parts: a 30-minute multiple choice test consisting of 46 questions to test your grammar and lexis, together with a 5-minute oral test to gauge your level of spoken English. In the written portion of the assessment you scored roughly half the marks available, while in your speaking test you fared slightly better with the examiner’s note saying that there was a noticeable first language interference in pronunciation and also sentence structure. Moreover, it was felt that you needed to work on widening your vocabulary pool. Needless to say that these results did not reflect an Advanced (C1) level, as you insisted you were, but, rather, an Intermediate (B1 – Higher) level.
When you disputed this placement, we followed the normal procedure of conferring with your tutors, all three of whom confirmed our initial assessment. However, we consented to you sitting for a progress test, to eliminate any lingering doubts. Normal procedure in our school is for learners to be allowed to sit for this test after four weeks of tuition, however we allowed you to sit this test after only ten days, as you were very insistent that you could not possibly have been an Intermediate level learner, but in fact insisted that you were an Advanced (C1) level learner.
This test was corrected by a different person in order to ensure an entirely objective assessment. You were given an Intermediate Level Progress Test in order to see if you had successfully completed at least 75% of the Intermediate Level syllabus. Unfortunately, the score in that test was quite a bit lower than the minimum 75% required to move up to a new level, and we were forced to strongly recommend that you stayed in the Intermediate level for at least another two or three weeks, as this had, so far, been supported by two different assessments, two different examiners, and three different teachers (apart from the fact that this review is replete with grammar and syntax errors not usually committed by a C1 learner).
We however, accepted your request to change to our business course since it would have made your lessons more relevant to your work-related needs. When we approached you to see how you were faring in class, you told us that everything was fine after this change, hence why we cannot fully understand the reason behind this feedback.
We are pleased to note that you enjoyed your time with the host family we chose for you. Since you commented that the food was somewhat ‘tasteless’, we took the trouble of contacted all the students who happened to be staying with the same family to check what they thought of this issue. All were very satisfied with the food and portions given.
One final note: At ELA we take pride in carefully assessing our students before placing them in the classes we think are most appropriate to their level. This is also important to ensure that prospective applicants do not find themselves in a situation where other students in their class have a different overall CEFR level to theirs, as would have been the case here if we had acceded to your request.
I liked study in your school. I hope to came back in the future.

The lessons were interesting and the teachers were really good! The atmosphere was nice! The organisation before hand was good, but not in that certain week. When I started at Monday, it was very chaotic at the office. For Business English, people with different language levels were put together in a group, but that didn't make sense. There could be a big difference between someone who is just B1 and someone who is almost C1 which I didn't like. I also tried to explain that during the course, but there was no other way.

My accommodation was fair. My apartment was dark, and the front neighbor was too near. Usually, I had the curtains closed. I had a European plug.
The Wi-Fi wasn’t working all the time. The best place was at living room. The furniture, I think, could be improved. The cleaning staff was good and kind.
The ELA School was kind. I did not know any other method to learn English. I think there are other methods to learn English.
Personally, 40 hours was too much. We finished at 16 to 15h in the afternoon, which is quite late to do anything after.
The most interesting, in my opinion, maybe, is 20h or 30h, and the last session to be “one to one” – a mixed method.
The materials used were usually photocopies, except for one book, which we didn’t use.
I have improved my English, but not a lot. I need more conversation, an environment of real English, and more time!
Dear Ms Abad,
Thanks for taking your time to write a review about your experience at ELA. We are pleased to see that overall your experience with us was a pleasant one and that you would not hesitate to recommend us to your friends. As regards your problems with your accommodation, these could have easily been addressed if you had approached one of the staff there or communicated this to the schools’ accommodation department, as detailed in the student pack given to all students at the start of their course. For instance, on checking with the Mercury residence, we were told that all guests that ask for an adapter are supplied with one, no questions asked. As you may know, there is no universal electrical plug system.
It is pertinent to point out that this particular accommodation option is aimed at younger students who are here on a tight budget, hence the lack of fancy furniture (in fact most of our 50+ students prefer 3*hotels in the area). However, we are pleased to note that you were more than satisfied with the overall cleanliness of the place.
With reference to the tuition offered, we are pleased to see that you did register progress in the 2 weeks here. As you rightly point out, there are a number of different methodologies that one may pursue in their quest to learn the language. At ELA we favour the communicative approach as we find students easily adapt to this fun, hands-on approach. This explains why our teachers source a number of course books and websites to plan their lessons. The workbook provided, is mostly availed of by teachers to provide supplementary homework as opposed to classwork.
We are of course glad that you found all our staff very approachable and friendly, especially since ELA markets itself as being the school that offers a personal service and were a family atmosphere reigns supreme.
With reference to the number of sessions booked, we partly agree that 40 sessions per week may be too much for some. However, not every student is the same. As you rightly point out, students can book from as little as 10 up to 40 group sessions per week. It all depends on the needs and exigencies of the student. Your suggestion of opting for a mix of 20 group and 10 individual sessions is very possible and, in fact, is quite popular with our students.
We would also like to point out that contrary to the wrong perception one may get from the review, at ELA we insist that our students are immersed in English and are totally against resorting to students’ mother tongue in order to teach English. Our policy is to mix our students’ nationalities as much as possible to ensure that this is never resorted to. Moreover, our fully qualified tutors know this and regularly undergo training to keep abreast of the latest pedagogical advances to ensure that the most effective teaching occurs in our classrooms.
Your comment regarding the need for more English comes across as somewhat contradictory, especially since the review states that 40 sessions were too much and next time round you would be opting for 30. There is also an element of truth in your final comment that one needs more time to master the language (especially seeing that the level in question was pre-intermediate ), 2-3 weeks is definitely not enough to achieve this. In fact, we always tell our students not to view language courses as an end in themselves but as the first rung of many that will eventually get you closer to that objective.
Hope the above puts your constructive comments in the right perspective. We look forward to welcoming you once more at our school.
It was much better than in a classical college and there were no college stereotypes. The professor was very sympathetic. If I had any negative thing to say, it would just have to be that the pauses were long and were not as interesting as the classes.

Homestays are carefully selected and offer students the opportunity to learn more about the local culture in a comfortable setting while studying English in St Julian's. These homes are often between 2 - 15 minutes away from the school by public transport. Families usually offer affordable meal plans that allow you to sample the local cuisine. If you have special requests or diet restrictions (because of religion or health reasons), please let us know in advance. Your housing starts on the Sunday before your first day of class and ends on the Saturday after your last day of class, unless otherwise noted. Learn more about homestay housing
