The chocolate is delicious, the architecture is divine, and going to French school in Belgium is understandably desirable. Throughout history, Belgium has retained its heritage, enchantment and regal charm. The capital Brussels is often in the international spotlight as home to the EU and NATO headquarters. As if the Grand Place, Laken Castle, Royal Palace, and cathedrals were not enough, Brussels is also home to over 80 museums including the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, all of which are great to visit during the mild Belgian winters and cool summers. Curiously, the Mannekin Pis statue is the most famous and visited place of all, yet also the smallest. To visit the rest of Belgium, an excellent transportation network of trains and buses makes everything very accessible. Almost all Belgian cities have stunning castles, cathedrals and central squares with encircling restaurants and bars. Cruise down a Bruges canal on a romantic journey, shop for diamonds in Antwerp, hear the belfry in Ghent, or eat waffles in the seaside town of Oostende. As you travel throughout, stay on the lookout for castles punctuating the countryside. The best hiking can be accomplished in the Ardennes, a forested and hilly region in the southeast of Belgium. If dark crawl spaces sound intriguing, check out the cave system near Han-sur-Lesse. Otherwise, grab a bike and ride around the towns searching for authentic Belgian brews.
