The market town of Brecon is located in southern Powys in Mid Wales. It is the county town of the county of Brecknockshire. It is the third largest town in Powys. The area was originally established as a cavalry or military base for the Romans. The River Honddu and the River Usk meet near the town center not far from the River Tarrell. Students enrolled in English school in Brecon should be sure to explore the Brecon Beacons National Park and its visitor center. The park has many things to do including an opportunity for guests to climb to the top of the highest mountain in South Wales. The Brecon Cathedral and St. Mary’s Cathedral are also interesting historical sites that visitors to the area should be sure to see. The town has many interesting, historic stone structures for visitors to enjoy. Also be sure to visit the Iron Age hill fort on Pen-y-Crug just northwest of town, or the remains of the Roman camp at Y Gaer to the west. Each offers a glimpse into the area’s lengthy and interesting history. Students taking English courses in Brecon might also be interested in visiting the Brecknock Museum for further information about the history of the area. Those lucky enough to be in the area during the Brecon Jazz Festival will be able to enjoy all that the festival brings to the area in terms of performances and fun.
