Cheltenham is sometimes referred to as Cheltenham Spa. It is a spa town and a borough in Gloucestershire, England. It sits on the edge of the Cotswolds. The River Chelt flows both through and under the town. Students enrolled in English school in Cheltenham might be interested to know that Cheltenham was designated as a spa town in 1716 when mineral springs were discovered in the area. Consider visiting the heritage Gloucestershire & Warwick Railway. Restored steam engines run between Cheltenham Racecourse and Toddington most weekends during the year. Horse racing has played a big part in the city’s culture since 1815. It is the home of the Gold Cup in British steeplechase horse racing, which is the main event of the Cheltenham festival which is held every March. The city is known for its many festivals, including the International Jazz Festival in May, the Cheltenham Cricket Festival in July or August, the Cheltenham Festival of Literature each October and a host of other events throughout the year. Students taking English courses in Cheltenham will find that the area is also known for its expensive boutiques with many visitors arriving in Cheltenham specifically to explore the various stores. The restaurants in Cheltenham are varied with delicious Indian fare, steak houses, Thai, Malaysian, French, Italian and more. There is definitely food to suit every palate. Although it still has the charms of a time gone by, the city is very much a modern, cosmopolitan destination that draws a number of visitors each year.
