South Bend is a city in Indiana most widely known as the home to the college Notre Dame. The area was first settled by fur traders in the early 18th century and the city’s original name was Southold. In 1835 the town was officially established and in 1865 it was incorporated as a city. Students enrolled in English school in South Bend might be interested to hear that the Studebaker Company got its start in South Bend as a wagon shop. The Singer Sewing Company was among other companies which contributed to the local economy in its earlier years. The Studebaker National Museum holds a large collection of wagons and automobiles including several Presidential carriages. Those interested in the arts might like to check the schedule at the Morris Performing Arts Center. Located in downtown South Bend it plays host to touring Broadway companies, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and the Southold Dance Theater. College football fans may hope to get tickets to see Notre Dame play, but tickets are hard to come by. Other team sports are not as likely to sell out. Baseball fans can catch a game by the local minor league club, the South Bend Silver Hawks. For a little adventure, try whitewater rafting in downtown South Bend on their man-made course. Kayaks are also allowed on the course. On this unique facility, the level of rapids can be controlled and is held at a “2” during recreational use hours.
