School location

We are located on a beautiful site comprised of 5 acres in Heredia. The site has six conveniently connected buildings that house 10 classrooms, administrative offices, and lots of space to study and rest. Porrosati Private Reserve is an American-Costa Rican, privately-owned nature reserve, and Spanish Institute located in Santa Barbara of Heredia, just 5 minutes from the historical city of Barva.

Porrosati’s quiet and beautiful location provides unlimited opportunities for Spanish learning, nature study, research, and some relaxation. Eco-travelers, natural history travelers, student groups, bird-watchers, and agricultural students will be delighted with the variety of flora and fauna and activities that we offer. The Campus also includes around 50 different kinds of native trees and plants, more than 80 species of birds, and a large river bordering the property. The private reserve where the Institute is located is a unique natural resource which has been developed as a rustic educational laboratory. We believe that business, development, and conservation must work together, that is why we work under a Respect for Nature Policy.

All Amistad participants will be supporting nature in its struggle. This ecologist approach which is part of Amistad’s philosophy is in harmony with our institute’s physical environment. Participants of Amistad have been a part of many environmental projects since our institute was established.
The concept of a language institution designed to accommodate and encourage the beneficial relationships humans have with animals and nature is unique. Showing how institutions can be built so humans live in harmony with nature and animals is important to anyone concerned with the care of the earth and all the creatures it supports. This was the original vision of Amistad Institute that began the development process of the Porrosati Private Refuge.

The Amistad Institute has identified the need to understand, promote and integrate the interactions among humans, animals, and the natural environment so they become natural parts of our institutions; thereby improving human health and strengthening the case for preserving natural habitat while opening our Campus to non-human species.
