Learn Swedish & live in your private teacher's home around Stockholm with Home Language International!
Home Language International (HLI) is a family-run business offering language courses in more than 20 languages in over 30 countries worldwide, including Swedish lessons at an experienced private teacher's home in Sweden. More than 5,000 students take advantage of our services every year. Ian Josephs, Danielle Josephs, their 5 adult children and an expert team of dedicated staff all put in very long hours for HLI.
You stay in an experienced teacher's family home, have one-to-one Swedish lessons and then continue to use the language during the rest of your stay in Stockholm. Because you are the only student, you are guaranteed individual attention. The lessons are completely designed for you, so the teacher will focus exactly on what you need. Mealtime conversation, television and social contacts are all in Swedish.
All of our teachers in Sweden have a university degree (or equivalent) and/or a recognised teaching certificate. All teachers have been visited by one of our local organisers. Their qualifications have been checked and their homes throughly inspected. During your stay in Stockholm, a local organiser will monitor your progress and make sure your experience is both happy and successful.

It was a wonderful experience for me to spend a week in my teacher Anitta’s home in Christmas time. I was welcomed with a Christmas Eve dinner and can’t remember how many fikas I had. I was happy to experience that I could engage conversations in Swedish in the company of Anitta’s children who came to visit on Christmas Day and her friends whom we visited the day after for a Fika and with whom we had dinner later during the week in Stockholm. I watched a documentary together with Anitta and specially appreciated a visit to Skansen in Stockholm with all the explanations there in Swedish. Unfortunately the language café that Anitta recommended me to attend at the library in Farsta was closed for two weeks but during all the activities and lessons that Anita provided for me I developed more and more confidence in speaking Swedish with other people. I would certainly recommend this to others who want to develop their fluency in the Swedish language.

I had a nice room en bathroom for my private use, even with a desk and little sofa. My teachers also took me om some cultural trips in the neighborhood. Within 1,5 week I could understand most of the language and have basic conversation.
The only thing I missed was having my own books. For the amount of money that should be included. Although I have the audio files, for continuing my study it would be nice to have the books also.
I enjoyed my homestay with Anitta in Stockholm. She delivered all that was advertised and more by meeting me on arrival at Stockholm station, showing me around the old town and taking me to various events in the city. It was true immersion and she went out of her way to make it a varied and interesting experience. She spoke Swedish most of the time, only providing the occasional English word when I was really lost. My aural comprehension improved by the end of the week. We even had some lessons in a nearby forest. Anitta has a pleasant house and provides typical Swedish meals. I would recommend this placement.

Activities were fun and interesting. I learned much from activities. Housing was ok. It was fun to help my teacher with cooking. I learned much about Stockholm and how to move there with public transport.

She went to the library ahead of time & selected books she knew would be well suited for me. She was very good at finding language related activities for me to participate in around Stockholm. The accommodations were great. Clean & quiet house where I was able sleep well. She was a great cook. She even washed & folded my laundry for me!

When I arrived my Swedish was very basic and she talked Swedish with me almost all the time. We visited nice places and ate good dishes, we went to several museums and had a good time together. She helped me when I needed to fix my covid test and accompanied me to the airport. I really enjoyed my staying with her and I learned to love Sweden and its people

Before arrival I felt supported by the the Language international team as not receiving any Schedule beforehand of my teacher (just the day of the arrival was sent and received already in Stockholm).
I was beforehand in Stockholm so I knew how to move around.
I reached via train and Uber to my new destination where Mrs.Sunnel was waiting with a nice and warm welcoming dinner , she explained me the schedule of the week and we talked about ourselves.
The neighbourhood was as I dreamed.. So, very quiet nice and cozy. Had my own room and bathroom in the house as well as my own space.
Mrs Sunnel made shure I could get all the clases and looked after me with hospitality.
I tried nevertheless to get the most of the week in Stockholm and planned also on my own things to do and visit in my "free" time.
I had the opportunity of having a lot conversations with Mrs Sunnel and Hannele (a friend of her in the neighbourhood) and that improved my vocabulary and listenting skills. I missed a bit some Youngsters slang and getting aound with people of my age but of course you can not have everything
I would definitelly recommend the experience and thank to all the team and hosting teacher for all the attention and effort .
Warm Regards
I pretty much liked absolutely everything about the whole week. My teacher was so kind and nice and made me feel very welcome. The food was delicious! It was a very short commute from the town I was staying in to the City so that was perfect for me as I loved visiting the sights in Stockholm. The classes were largely benefitial of course. We watched the news in swedish every day and in the evenings we watched Swedish movies which also taught me a bit about swedish music and culture. All in all it was a fantastic week and my swedish improved so much. One of my favourite things was how picturesque Älvsjö is. Everywhere there were really nice swedish cottages and houses and there was a lovely forest to take a stroll in during the evening.

As a beginner, I could have learnt more when the teacher would have talked less English.
