Nerja, Spain is located in the Andalusia region on the southern coast. This city was once famous throughout the Muslim world for its production of agricultural and silk products. Students studying Spanish courses in Nerja will quickly fall in love with city which was dubbed ‘the balcony of Europe’ by King Alfonso XII. For a step back in time, students will enjoy visiting the prehistoric caves containing skeletal remains and cave paintings thought to date back 20,000 years. The caves are one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions. Throughout the year, in a natural cavern near the caves, guests can enjoy productions put on in this very unique ‘theatre’ formed by nature. With a yearly music festival and a variety of concerts, this theatre truly resides in a breathtaking setting. Students taking a break from Spanish school in Nerja will be amazed by the views visible from Balcon de Europa which is built on the site of an old 9th century fortress. This now modern site is a popular place for dining, drinking and visiting. Students might consider taking a horse-drawn carriage ride for an interesting sightseeing tour of the town. Another great place to spend some time is at the Jardines Urbanizacion Capistrano Playa – beautiful gardens filled with native sub-tropical plants.
