Panama City, often called the ‘Miami of the south’, is the most vibrant and cosmopolitan city in Central America. Serving as the capital of Panama, it is also an important international banking and trade center. Panama City was founded in 1519 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias de Avila. Students attending Spanish school in Panama City will indeed be aware of the famous canals. For an up close and personal look, take a trip to the Miraflores Locks Visitor’s Center for an interesting view of the locks. When exploring Panama City, students will immediately recognize the diversity. With the difference ranging from glitzy high rises, to the historic area of Casco Viejo and its dilapidated buildings along cobblestone streets, Panama City is a conglomeration of old and new. Whether shopping for native handicrafts or visiting one of the modern shopping malls, there is something for everyone in Panama City. In Casco Viejo, take a self-guided walking tour or consider hiring a guide for a more personal look at the area. View the beautifully restored historic buildings and visit one of the many street side cafes while there. When students are ready for a break from Spanish courses in Panama City, they can visit one of the areas known for having a lively nightlife, or perhaps try their luck at one of the casinos. A ride on the Panama Canal Railway is another great option for students wanting to learn more about the area. Inaugurated in 1855, this railway was originally built in response to the California gold rush. From the train, enjoy views of the Panama Canal and the rainforest. This truly unique city is beautiful in its history, terrain, and its people.
