Any place called the "Butterfly Island" has to be beautiful. Known by its more popular name, Guadeloupe, this French-Caribbean locale is essentially two big islands side-by-side (like butterfly wings). Taking French courses in Guadeloupe is like having two experiences in one. The eastern island, Grande-Terre, is the hedonistic side, full of beach bars, bikinis, surfing schools and other fun-filled things. During the day, dive into the azure blue waters surrounding the island. Then party the night away to the local dance styles of zouk and kompa, while listening to traditional music like la biguine and gwo ka. In contrast to the low-lying plains and hills of Grande-Terre is the western island of Basse-Terre. This is the peaceful side, where La Grande Soufriere volcano dominates the landscape and is mostly designated a national park. Enjoy day hikes around the tropical interior or spot magnificent marine life while snorkeling and scuba diving the Jacques Cousteau underwater reserve. While Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre are the two largest islands, they are only two of the nine islands that make up the complete Guadeloupe archipelago. Cosmopolitan Terre-de-Haut and rural Marie-Galante are two more great places to visit. This is what makes Guadeloupe so exciting – it's more than meets the eye. As a French overseas territory, Guadeloupe pairs the modern infrastructure and conveniences of a first-class nation with the flavors and style of the Caribbean. With so much to offer, it's an easy choice to go to French school in Guadeloupe, but you may never want to leave.
